My Story
Life changed. So did my priorities.
I’m Bruce McClain. For years, I was busy building businesses and planning what came next. Then my health gave me a different set of questions.
When health stopped following the plan
After having COVID, I went to the emergency room on Super Bowl Sunday in 2021 and came home with an unexpected diabetes diagnosis. That began years of health problems and questions that didn’t always have clear answers.
Later, I was diagnosed with stage IV NASH cirrhosis. At one point, I was told I might need a liver transplant. My condition has improved, and my specialist says I don’t need a transplant right now. I still have cirrhosis and health challenges to manage. Today, though, I look and feel better than I have in years.
I started hearing “someday” differently.
I used to have more confidence that there would be time later. Going through all of that changed how I think about the future—and what I’m willing to keep putting off.
I want more time with my wife, Kristin, and the people who matter to me. I want to take trips, try things and make room for experiences while I can enjoy them.
I’m still building.
My career has taken me through programming, technology leadership, digital marketing, video production and entrepreneurship. I founded two agencies, and today that background continues through Two Roads Digital.
I still have plenty of ideas. What’s changed is how I think about work fitting into the rest of the life I want.
That’s where Not Normal comes in.
For me, it means questioning the path I’m on and choosing what matters now. Here, I share the health experiences that changed my perspective, the everyday adjustments and the family, travel and business stories that are all part of the same life.
Some are serious. Some are funny. I’m still figuring it out, and I’m sharing the process.
Anything I share about my health is my personal experience, not medical advice.
